Slawit.org is a hyperlocal community news and information website.
According to the mighty Wikipedia hyperlocal news is:
…characterised by three major elements. First, it refers to entities and events that are located within a well defined, community scale area. Secondly, it is intended primarily for consumption by residents of that area. Thirdly, it is created by a resident of the location.
Which pretty much sums up what I’m trying to do here.
Since moving to Slaithwaite around seven years ago (defecting over the hills from Holmfirth) I have been amazed at how much goes on here, and have often thought we need to have a central place on the internet where people can go to find out about it. Slawit.org is my attempt to fill that gap.
Many hyperlocal sites such as the excellent nearby Saddleworth News site are written in a very professional and impartial manner and read like traditional print local newspapers. However here at Slawit.org I’m going to be adopting a more informal style of writing – mainly because it’s the only style I’m really capable of doing. Therefore I should give a warning that most of the content here will be tinged with my own personal opinion, bias, and pathetic attempts at humour, and so should be taken as lightly as possible.
If you feel you would like to write here on the site then I’m very much open to having additional contributors. Similarly if you have some news or an event that you feel I should be covering then make sure to let me know. You can contact me via the contact page.
This webpage is not a business venture. I’m doing it for fun and don’t envisage making any money from it. However if I get approached to cover a story that I feel is blatantly commercial in nature then I may ask for a donation to Slawit.org’s official charity of choice – Huddersfield based The Joseph Salmon Trust.
